On Thursday 12th October, Omagh Thunder Senior Men’s hit the road once again, this time away to Belfast Phoenix where they were expecting another tough matchup following last weeks close win against Ballymena. Two away games against top teams to start the season is no easy task but Omagh went into the game with a good mentality.

Omagh started the game matching Phoenix basket for basket with Tiyrone Weir, Charlie McKinney and Padraig Donovan leading Omagh in scoring. The quarter ended 16-16 and the game was already looking to go down to the wire. Omagh came out in the second quarter however, with a new defensive strategy and went on a 20-0 run in the quarter to sail into the lead. Phoenix weren’t able to handle the new defence and their shots weren’t falling allowing Omagh to gain momentum that didn’t seem to stop in the quarter. The first half ended with Omagh 36-16 up and in a comfortable position.

Phoenix weren’t going to give up easily as within the first few minutes of the 3rd, they had clawed back to within 10 points and forcing lots of turnovers for Omagh. Tiyrone Weir played a huge part in keeping Omagh ahead by the end of the quarter, being dominant in the post. Omagh were up by 14 points going into the final quarter 50-36. In the last quarter Omagh were able to maintain their lead and a couple of fast break baskets saw them finish the game with a score line 61-41. Phoenix were great competition but a great second quarter by Omagh Thunder saw them take a comfortable lead that they were able to maintain. Tiyrone Weir took MVP honours with 19 points.

Omagh are home this Thursday 19th October at 8:15pm in the Station Centre to Magherafelt Titans. All support welcome for our first home game of the season!
