On Thursday 19th October, Omagh Thunder welcomed the mighty Magherafelt Titans basketball club for Omagh’s first home game of the season. Omagh were looking forward to this matchup, coming off of two away wins against tough competition. With a good crowd present, Omagh were in the zone and ready to play.

The first quarter started with Tiyrone Weir dominating the post, starting with an early basket and foul. The points quickly racked for both teams with Magherafelt being ahead with a few minutes left however, two 3 pointers from Charlie McKinney and Conall McCann contributing under the rim, Omagh got a good lead 23-16 at the end of the first. Cillian Deehan started the second quarter with a 3 pointer and Ronan Bradley was fouled on a made basket, knocking down the free throw that came with it. Tiyrone Weir then went on his own rampage quickly netting 8 points. Charlie McKinney ended the half with a 7-point run of his own, leaving Omagh Thunder 51-38 up. Good ball movement around the Magherafelt zone defence meant that Omagh weren’t turning the ball over much and were getting good looks.

Good ball movement from Omagh saw them get good open shots that they were able to knock down. By the end of the 3rd quarter Omagh were running away with a score line 72-55. Magherafelt had other ideas in mind. With the 4th quarter starting, C McCoy had his fair share of points for Magherafelt, and with the assistance of his teammates, brought Omagh’s lead down to only 10 points at one stage. Charlie McKinney however went on his own 3 point shooting spree, knocking down 4 of his 7 three pointers in the fourth quarter, combining for 14 points in the quarter alone, pushing Omagh’s lead back out and with Eoin Callaghan and Tiyrone Weir contributing as well, Omagh ended the game winners 90-72. Omagh are now 3 wins from 3 for the season topping the table.
