On Thursday 5th October, Omagh Thunder made the journey to Ballymena to face off in their first league game of the season. Omagh knew Ballymena were going to be good competition from last season and went into the game knowing it was going to be a tough game. Charlie McKinney opened the game up early with a 3 pointer, quickly following it up with a trip to the free throw line for 2 free throws. Padraig Donovan and Ronan McKenna both helped on the offensive end with 3’s of their own, however a run by Ballymena saw them take the first quarter with a 1 point lead, 12-11. In the second quarter Ballymena came out strong with some quick baskets and extended their lead. Omagh were struggling to keep up with the pace and with crucial baskets from Tiyrone Weir and Padraig Donovan, Omagh ended the first half down 26-21. A change in defensive strategy going into the 3rd quarter meant that Omagh was able to capitalise on the defensive rebounds and push the ball forward, allowing Cillian Deehan and Charlie McKinney claiming vital 3 pointers to reduce Ballymena’s lead to 37-34. Going into the last quarter Omagh pushed hard with Tiyrone Weir being the driving force behind Omagh’s baskets with 6 points in the last quarter. Padraig Donovan and Charlie McKinney also contributed baskets of their own to push Omagh ahead in the dying minutes. Superb defence and control of the tempo from Omagh saw them win the quarter 10-2 and getting the win 44-39. MVP honours went to Tiyrone Weir and Charlie McKinney.
