Senior game report: Omagh Thunder vs Carrick Flyers
Mens Basketball NI Division 2
Omagh Thunder vs Carrickfergus Flyers
Carrick Flyers are one of two teams to beat Omagh so far this season in a 9 point upset back in October. The Thunder were not happy with that loss and were more than ready to rectify that last Tuesday.
From the tip off the Thunder were fired up and ready, racing out to a 16 point lead after holding the Flyers to only 2 baskets in the first quarter. Omagh’s entire starting five had contributed to their scoreline as the quarter ended.
In the second quarter new acquisition Stephen McGill came off the bench and confidently tallied 11 points from a mixture of offensive put-backs, three pointers and free throws as he played havoc with the Carrick defenders. Carrick could not get in any sort of rhythm offensively and Omagh had a commanding 43-12 lead at the half.
The Thunder were not about to let up in the third quarter as Padraig Donovan, Radek Brandt and Ieuan Maguire shared the ball and the scoring well to further demoralise the tiring Flyers and seal the win for Omagh.
The final quarter was a relaxed 10 minutes as the Thunder enjoyed the run of the court knocking in another 27 points with Bradley scoring 9 and McGill scoring another 10 to earn the Weigh Inn Bar MVP with 21 points. As this was a defensive master class, special mention must go to Ramunas Morosaz who’s rebounding and shot-blocking was outstanding as the Thunder took the win by a staggering 60 points.
